Possible Google Algorithm Change

Google has released a research paper outlining possible considerations by the search giant to rank websites in its search engine results based on factual accuracy, instead of the current algorithm being used. If Google made a decision to implement this change to its ranking algorithm, people performing searches would likely see results excluding those sites that exist on the web full of misinformation and perhaps a little misleading for no other reason than to gain higher search engine results/rankings.

Google currently uses the number of incoming links (also known as inbound links or backlinks) to a web page as a proxy for quality, determining where that site appears in Google search results. So in essence, those web pages that many other sites link to are ranked higher as a general rule of thumb.

The disadvantage of the current system is that websites full of misinformation can rise up the rankings and achieve greater positioning and thus traffic over those that are perhaps more relevant or appropriate for the needs of the searcher.

As we say – at this stage, this is only a research paper that Google has been discussing, this is not yet from our understanding something Google has planned or approved to be implemented, but we should certainly watch this space.
